Next diet plan? Get some sleep

Next diet plan? Get some sleep: "It's time to check in on those New Year's resolutions. How's the weight-loss going? The exercise?
Here's a study that, because it combines those two things, you might find interesting (and it all has to do with sleeping - our favorite exercise).
While the number of hours you sleep won't affect the number of pounds you'll lose while dieting, it will affect where those pounds come from, according to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
When dieters got adequate sleep (8 1/2 hours), most of the weight they lost came from fat deposits.
'Those who got less sleep (about 5 1/2 hours) lost more ‘fat-free mass,' which includes mostly muscle but also other tissues such as liver, kidneys, etc.,' said study co-author Dr. Plamen Penev of the University of Chicago.
Basically, as our metabolism slows at bedtime, the body looks for places to burn fuel (preferably fat). The longer we sleep, the more fat is burned where it is stored in the greatest quantities. When we have fewer hours of sleep, the body treats us like a drive-through window and grabs what is quickest and most accessible: muscle mass and organ tissues. The more time we have sleeping, the more we look like a home-cooked sit-down meal to Mr. Metabolism.
The bottom line: A good night's sleep is essential for maintaining muscle and blasting fat."
